Where's Kingston? The town of Kingston is approx. 297 kilometers from Adelaide (South Australia) in a South Easterly direction along the coast towards Mt Gambier but 155 kilometers away from it. The following link will take you to a map that you can click on to zoom in, or click on "zoom out" to do just that. TO MAP. Close window to return here. About Kingston Kingston was established in the early days as a resting place on the journey from Adelaide to Victoria. Before the route was made through the inland towns of Tintinara and Bordertown, all "traffic" went via the Coorong. In later years a railway line was built from Naracoorte to Kingston and the jetty made longer to enable bigger boats to be loaded and transport the wheat and wool from the more productive areas inland to overseas markets. Today the rail line has been closed and the town is a service centre for the farming community and a base for a thriving crayfish (lobster) fishing industry. Because of the sheltered waters of Lacepede Bay, the town is a popular place for people retiring from inland areas looking for cooler climates with a chance to fish to while away the time. What does Kingston have? With a population of about 1700, which swells considerably in the holiday season, Kingston has all the usual facilities needed to support a small town. A quick list is :- 2 Hotels, 2 Motels, 3 Roadhouses, 4 Garages, Chemist, Newsagent, 2 Supermarkets, Police Station, Post Office, 3 Banks, 1 takeaway shop (+r/houses), 1 hardware shop, 2 tyre dealers, plus other misc. shops like video hire & clothing etc. Facilities for tourists consist of a well appointed caravan park, fishing and 4 wheel drive tour providers, a new boat ramp with 4 lanes and a beautiful jetty to fish off. The beaches in the Kingston area are some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the world. They have firm white sands that allow people to drive for many kilometers along them until they find their "own" piece of paradise. Most of the actual beaches have a gentle slope into the deeper water, and have no rip etc, and are therefore extremely safe for children to play and swim with minimum supervision.
