As the town of Kingston was founded by George Kingston in 1858 and in 1865 declared an official port, it is assumed the Hotel was built around 1858.
The Royal Mail Hotel was the terminus for the coach service running between Adelaide and Port MacDonnell. The circuit judge used the commercial travellers room to hold his court cases in until the new courthouse was built in 1869/70.
